More than likely if you get to know a few "Aussies" while "downunder" you'll be invited to a "CLUB". Most Australians belong to a "CLUB" whether it be a "Returned Soldiers League" (RSL or "Rissole") a Sports club such as a "Footy" (Football or Leagues) Club, Golf Club, Bowling Club, Yacht Club, Motorboat Club or a Workmans Club or any other excuse for a CLUB.
Membership dues to belong to these Clubs are low hence everyone belongs. The Club is subsidized (in NSW) by gambling primarily on those "one armed bandits" the slot machines otherwise known as "the Pokies".
Such clubs are lavishly decedent with irradescent "glow in the dark" carpeting, early 70's decor and Casino like dens containing rows of "Pokies" lined with Beer drinking, smoking "Mums and Dads" popping 10,20 cent and $1 coins into the ever hungry slot of the "Pokies".
CLUBS do however provide congenial ambiance for a Bloke to take the "missus" or "the main squeeze" for a relatively inexpensive night out. A restaurant whether basic cafeteria style or full sit down waiter service is available. Local Bands with dancing or light entertainment or even a "picture show" (movie) may be available.
Some CLUBS offer exercise and workout gyms, racquet sports such as squash plus indoor bowls, billiards and darts where one can work up a good thirst for that ubiquitous "amber refreshment".
Australians love their CLUBS and delight in taking Visitors to their club to "sign them in" in the Guest Book.
When you visit your friend's CLUB appropriate dress is required. You will definitely be refused admission if you show up in Shorts and "thongs" (flip flops) so regular casual dress is appropriate. A jacket is generally appreciated and a tie may be required for formal dining.
So enjoy your visit to your "mates" CLUB. Remember to compliment him
on the decor and ambiance . He'll think you're "a Bloomin nice Yank"
and maybe even invite you back.
Your Mates,
Bob & Bazza
